Maritime Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Service

Maritime Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Service

In accordance with article 56 of Law 48/2003, (text amended by Law 33/2010) services provided by public ports are classified into the following categories:

  • General services
  • Port services
  • Commercial services
  • Maritime aids to navigation and lighthouse services

General services are common services for users of the port that do not need to be requested, as well as those services necessary for the Port Authority to carry out its functions. These include:

Maritime aids to navigation, beacons and lighthouse services which guide the vessel’s approach and access to the port, as well as beacons inside the port.

(Article 57 of Law 48/2003, amended by Law 33/2010).

In accordance with article 58 of the afore-mentioned Law, the provision of general services is the responsibility of the Port Authority. Notwithstanding, the management of these services can be entrusted to a third party provided that safety is not put at risk and that it does not involve the exercise of authority.

The Maritime aids to navigation and lighthouse service managed by the port entities aims to install, maintain, control and inspect visual, acoustic, electronic and radio devices, both active and passive, that improve navigation safety and the movement of vessels along the Spanish coastline, and to confirm the position of vessels at sea.

(Article 85 Law 48/2003, amended by Law 33/2010).

With this objective in mind, the Port Authority installs and maintains a number of devices, acting in accordance with the terms established in the applicable legislation.
