Aids to Navigation

Aids to Navigation Service

The purpose of the maritime aids to navigation and lighthouse service regulated by this law is to install, maintain, monitor and inspect the aids used to improve navigation safety along the Spanish coastal sea by confirming the positioning of sailing vessels and facilitating their movement.

Aids to navigation are visual, acoustic, electronic or radionavegation devices used to make sailing and the movement of vessels safer, making it possible to confirm the positioning of vessels at sea.

The aids are positioned depending on the range required, the physical characteristics of the coastline and the navigation risks associated with each area. Developments in technology and the recommendations of international organisations are also determining factors.

In order to maintain aids to navigation and ensure they are properly identified and used, at the request of Ports of the State, the Ministry of Public Works will establish limits and easements over the adjoining lands as deemed necessary, thereby covering the following types and boundaries:

A.- Access to navigation aids.

B.-For visual aids:

1. Height-distance, to protect the light cone and to identify the daytime signal.

2. Colours and the rhythmic character of the surrounding lights.

3. Background lighting.

C.- Radionavigation aids:

1. The minimum distance for the positioning radio transmitters, high voltage facilities and industries and electric railways.

2. Height-distance to ensure that signals sent and received are protected. In any case, the following limitations shall be observed:

a) Restrictions can only be established on the use of red, green, blue, white and amber lights.

b)For distances less than 1000 metres, the angle on the horizon used when observing from the maximum height of the receiver antennae of any    kind of radionavigation aid, will be a maximum of five degrees from the highest point of any obstacle.

c) Any of those established in Ley de Ordenación de lasTelecomunicaciones[Telecommunications Regulation Law] with regard to the protection of the   electromagnetic spectrum, for the purpose of radionavigation aids.
